Albion Primary School’s Journey to China: A 10-Day Adventure of Learning, Culture, and Discovery!
In March and April 2025, twelve Year 6 pupils and 4 members of staff including the Headteacher from Albion Primary School embarked on a transformative 10-day educational visit to China — an experience that will remain etched in their memories forever. Over the course of the trip, the children visited three extraordinary cities, nine outstanding schools, and a collection of breath-taking historical and cultural landmarks, all while immersing themselves in Chinese life, language, and tradition.
Exploring China’s Rich Heritage: Unforgettable Attractions
In Beijing, we stepped back in time at the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the children were fascinated by its symmetrical design and the deep symbolism built into its architecture. From there, they stood on the iconic stones of Tiananmen Square, understanding the vastness of China’s history and its significance in the modern world.
The Forbidden City offered a powerful look into the lives of emperors and dynasties, with its golden roofs, intricate carvings, and maze-like courtyards. Meanwhile, the children had a moment of pure joy at Beijing Zoo, where they saw the beloved panda bears, creatures they had only seen in books and online until that moment.

One of the most physically and emotionally powerful experiences was the climb up the Great Wall of China. With thousands of steps and steep inclines, not a single child gave up or complained — a true show of resilience and determination. The pride felt by the staff as the children reached such heights was immeasurable. It wasn’t just a climb — it was a statement: we can do hard things.
At the Summer Palace, the group wandered through beautifully painted corridors and gazed across the glistening Kunming Lake, learning about imperial leisure and art while surrounded by breath-taking scenery.

Whilst in Changsha, the children visited the renowned Yuelu Academy, one of the oldest academies of higher learning in China. Standing amongst ancient stone buildings, surrounded by peaceful courtyards and the scent of spring blossoms, the children were given the chance to reflect on the depth of China’s educational roots — a moment of quiet inspiration for young minds with big futures.
Also in Changsha, we explored the natural beauty of Juzizhou (Orange) Island, a stunning island park set in the middle of the Xiang River. The vast green spaces and striking statue of Chairman Mao created a moment of calm for the children to run, laugh, and soak in the scenic views, learning about history in an environment that felt like a dream.

School Visits: Learning Through Engagement
Over the course of 10 days, our pupils visited nine schools, where they were welcomed like family. From the very first school to the last, every visit was filled with kindness, enthusiasm, and an eagerness to connect.
The children participated in a wide range of hands-on activities that brought Chinese culture to life. They learned traditional dumpling-making, took part in calligraphy, and mastered the delicate techniques of traditional paper cutting and ceramics. One highlight was creating a clay crocodile — a mix of creativity and fun that brought big smiles and proud moments.
One of the most futuristic and exciting activities involved AI-powered skipping, where facial recognition technology tracked their skipping count, helping children monitor progress and improvement over time. They also explored traditional tie-dyeing, creating beautiful patterns and learning the heritage behind the process. Every club, every moment, was filled with learning and laughter.

Cultural Immersion: Food, Friendships, and the Fast Lane
The children embraced every part of Chinese culture — especially the food! From tasting traditional hot pots to discovering new flavours and textures, they showed open-mindedness and courage in trying unfamiliar dishes.
Riding the high-speed train from one city to another was a thrilling experience in itself — sleek, smooth, and unbelievably fast. It gave the children a sense of just how advanced and connected China truly is.
Strangers on the street greeted us warmly, often asking for photos with our children. These spontaneous moments of joy and cultural exchange taught the children about kindness, curiosity, and the beauty of shared humanity.

A Journey That Changed Us
This trip was more than a visit — it was a journey of growth. The children of Albion Primary became more confident, more open, and more resilient. They made friendships with children across the globe, overcame challenges with determination, and immersed themselves in experiences that shaped them deeply.
Our heartfelt thanks go to our incredible guides Simeng, Janice, and Bob, whose knowledge, warmth, and unwavering support made this journey possible. Their love for their country and dedication to our children’s experience was unmatched. We truly could not have done this without them.
As we boarded the plane to return home, there were tears all around — a clear sign of just how meaningful this adventure had been. The friendships, the memories, and the lessons will stay with us always.
As we continue with Albion’s global journey, with friendship school agreements now in place, we look forward to nurturing our relationships with our Chinese partners, exploring both the similarities and differences in our education systems, and building a future where our children can thrive as global citizens.
